SEDONAKIND OPERATION SPECIAL DELIVERY- EARTHDAY 2018
In its third year, Operation Special Delivery has become a SedonaKind signature event, one that we all embrace and look forward to with great joy. It’s our chance to find new ways to thank the unsung heroes of our community, and to let them know how much their efforts matter to us all. The first year, we sent out 200 handmade cards along with pottery hearts, and last year we delivered 100 beautiful ‘Boxes of Love’. All of this is done, of course, anonymously, and SedonaKind members are pretty cute trying to ring doorbells while scurrying away. This year, we had a whole new idea.
Random Acts of Gardening is a wonderful Non Profit run by our own Kim Corey, and she generously offered to partner with us this year for our Operation Special Delivery. Thanks to her expertise and her big heart, we were able to create 50 beautiful container gardens filled with colorful spring plants, each with a SedonaKind kindness charm and thank you card attached. We decided to do this event in April, in honor of Earth Day, and even the containers are recyclable!
So we had a wonderful new idea, and a wonderful new partner to guide us. Now all that was left was to plant 50 container gardens, keep them watered and tended, and then deliver them all on Earth Day weekend. No problem!!!! On April 9th SedonaKind members gathered at the home of our own Cheri Baldwin (so many thanks Cheri!) to receive a tutorial from Master Gardener Kim on how to successfully plant a container garden. 50 large container pots, over 250 gorgeous flowering spring plants, and 11 eager SK-ers accepted the challenge. We all arrived at 10:00, trowels and garden gloves in hand, sun hats on, and high spirits on parade. In less than 90 minutes, all the containers were planted and lined up on Cheri’s porch (thank you again, Cheri). She will baby sit them, water them and I suspect perhaps sing to them until the 19th. Then SedonaKind members will pick them up and deliver them to 50 special and surprised unsung heroes throughout our community.
It was a morning filled with flowers, sunshine, high spirits, and the kindness that makes SedonaKind the group we all love. Thanks to Kim and Random Acts of Gardening, to Cheri who made all the logistics possible, and to all the SedonaKind members who came to create the magic. And of course, to all our unsung heroes who inspire us every day.
