KINDNESS WARMS THE HEART- AND LITTLE HEADS!
The KIS committee of SedonaKind really felt like we were Santa’s elves, as we delivered wonderful, warm knitted hats to every child from K through third grade at West Sedona School just before Christmas. The hats were created from beautiful donated yarn by SedonaKind’s knitting team, and each was one of a kind. Our visit was a surprise for the kids, and they were so excited to be able to choose exactly which hat they wanted. Some knew right away which one they loved best, others modeled several and really thought hard about which was the absolute perfect one to take home. There were shouts of glee, and a chorus of thank you’s in every classroom. One of the little boys asked our group if we would like a cookie- and proudly presented the two of them arranged carefully on a paper plate. Then he graciously added “You can keep the plate!” Some of the KIS teams sang carols with the kids after they chose their hats, and had fun taking pictures of them in their new finery. As we waved goodbye to our “kindness kids”, we took the memory of their happy faces home with us as possibly the best holiday gift that we received. The whole KIS team is looking forward to January, when we bring great new kindness books, activities and puppet shows to our classrooms. The hats were gifts to the children, and our time with the children are gifts to all of us.
Knitting Kindness 2016 |
SedonaKind knitters were pleased to present over 350 hats to the American Heritage Schools in Cottonwood and Camp Verde…just as the cold weather hit. Children were allowed to choose their own special hat from various styles, colors and sizes. To avoid a “MadCap Melee”, the children were taken into the gym one classroom at a time to make their selections from hats laid out on tables. They had a wonderful time, as you can see from the pictures and video. Both schools are having a festive hat and socks day on the 19th so they can keep them on all day.
We're so grateful for all the generous donations of yarn that we've received via The Wish List, making this possible. Scarves might be next (who knows?) so if your fingers are itching to start knitting…just contact us!
** A special thanks to Barbara Schaefer, Sedona Knit Wits, and the many individuals that donated yarn for this project; and knitters: Karen Dansby, Katie Hamilton, Linda Ferry, Joy Sinnott, Gerri Crelot, Vicki Smith, Teresa Ray, Kim Girard, Noreen Lisowski and Sandy Brandvold.
