Kids Say The Kindest Things
By Lou Ann Bruck
There was a radio show that aired beginning in 1942 that became a TV Comedy series in the fifties run by Art Linkletter. It was called ‘Kids say the Darndest Things’. My brother-in-law, Bob was on the radio show as a child. As my husband, Thomas explains the story; his brother was asked by Art Linkletter what his father did for a living. Young Bob told Art he was a bookie. Art continued asking more about it, since he thought maybe the young Bob’s Dad published books. Bob insisted that his Dad was a bookie. Back then being a bookie was illegal! Kids do say the darndest things! Another coincidence about Art is that his daughter lives here in Sedona and is a dear friend. She is such a kind and caring person!
Yesterday I was blessed to go to West Sedona School with other ‘Kindness Ladies’ from ‘Kindness in the Schools’ program run by SedonaKind There were six of us who read to children in Kindergarten to Second Grade. Each book was about kindness and then we shared an activity with them. Cheryl and I went to two different second grade classrooms and read the ‘Kindness Quilt’. We gave each child a paper square shaped like a quilt to write an act of kindness for others then color and draw them too! They shared the sweetest acts of kindness with their friends and families. None were funny, yet very heart-warming! One girl said she had been mean with her best friend and was going to tell her she was sorry. Another student said she was going to be kind to the earth and take care of it! A young boy helped his Mom make breakfast!
In one of the other classrooms, I heard they had read Fiona Flamingo. Fiona Flamingo is the ‘feelings book for kids that unlocks emotional intelligence superpowers’. Fiona changed colors depending on how she felt. One little boy said he had chosen gray because when he was younger he was very sad. None of the other children played with him. Now he is happy since he has lots of friends!
Last year we read the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ book and there were live kits we gave them earlier to watch their metamorphosis. While several of us were reading to students outdoors, a large butterfly flew by the area where we all were! We all noticed and were in awe of the timing as we shared the miracle of life! We are doing it again this year, don’t know if the butterflies will make an appearance or not!
If anyone else would like to join us reading to students at West Sedona School or Oak Creek School, please let us know as we would love for you to be part of sharing with students. The more Kindness lady readers the better! It is such a joy filled experience!!
Happy Spring
