Dad's and Flags
by Julie Lilly
In June we celebrate our Fathers and the Flag. As I reflect this year I begin to think about several men in my life. Both of my grandfathers had passed away years before I was born so growing up it was my father who I had a close relationship with. My father was always a good example for me. He served in the military, after he retired he became a school teacher. He was always willing to help a neighbor or friend. He taught so many of my friends to waterski and never lost his patience when it would take at least 50 tries before they got up. He served and gave his time in his church callings, never complaining.
My husband reminds me that he is not my father when I buy him Father's day cards, but I still do it. We had the opportunity to stay with a friend who recently has been widowed. While there my husband helped her with a list of "honey-dos". He helped her with some computer issues, did some work around the yard, and a few more things. They might have been simple for him but sometimes it's not always the big things that make a difference in someone's life.
I found this poem I'd like to share, I don't know the author.
God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree.
The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea.
The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night.
The wisdom of the ages, The power of eagles flight.
The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed.
The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need.
Then God combined these qualities, And then there was nothing more to add.
He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it--Dad.
