2021 Planning Meeting Recap - Get Involved
Thanks to all of you who attended and participated our 2021 planning meeting. A special thanks to those who presented the wonderful ongoing projects as well as ideas for new projects. 2020 was a challenging year but as the slideshow at the beginning our our meeting demonstrated, Covid can’t stop kindness!! We spread a great deal of kindness in 2020.
For those of you who want to get more involved there were plenty of opportunities shared for both our ongoing projects as well as some terrific new project ideas! These existing and new projects are recapped below along with information on where to advance the video to the exact spot where each speaker presents. We have also included contact information for each project or you can simply email [email protected] and we will get your name to the appropriate individual or contact each project leader directly. Their contact information is below.
The information below is a recap of the volunteer opportunities and other ways to get involved.
Ongoing Projects:
Kindness in Schools (KIS): Pam Hollenbach [email protected]
KIS will hopefully be back to our full reading program by next school year. KIS would welcome new members to join us at the schools, reading Kindness books to primary grade students.
Kindness Korner at the Sedona Public Library - this project is in the planning stages but we anticipate needing volunteers in recording the reading of kindness books and helping with grab and go craft projects for the kids.
Let Pam know if you want to join the SedonaKind Kindness in Schools committee.
Knitters: Katie Hamilton [email protected] Marge Schwartz [email protected] & Gerri Crelot [email protected]
Our Knitters continue to do an outstanding job! Marge and Gerri presented a new opportunity that should encourage more members to join the knitters group. It involves knitting or crocheting squares that then can then be fashioned into beautiful mosaic blankets and lap blankets. You don’t even need to know how to knit or crochet to help make the blankets. Katie will be pulling together a knitters meeting soon so let her know if you want to be involved. You can also contact Marge or Gerri directly.
Season of Kindness & the Kindness Column: Jawn McKinley [email protected]
Our Season of Kindness takes place in the Fall so you will see more about that as we get closer.
Our Kindness Columns are a big part of our monthly newsletters, and speak to our readers in so many different ways. They’re written by you, our members, and talk about some kindness that you’ve experienced, seen, heard about, or just felt deep in your heart. Your column can be as short or long as you like. It can even be a photo that has made your heart sing, or a poem, however you want to talk about kindness and what it means to you. Just choose a month, and email [email protected]. If you would like to see previous column just click on this link. https://www.sedonakind.org/monthly-column-archives.html
New Project Ideas:
Kids Activity/Grief Kits to be donated to the Arizona Crisis Team: (ACT) www.azcrisisteam.org Christine Schneider [email protected]
A simple draw string cloth bag filled with a few things to both make a young child feel seen & cared for, and to help them express their feelings during the crisis their family is facing. It could include such things as a small fleece stuffed heart, tissue pack, colored pencils, DIY drawing book, stationery or card for writing a note, etc. The committee would need cutters (for material for bags & hearts and paper cutters for the DIY book), sewers (machine and hand), materials gatherers/coordinators, someone to download and print things and “stuffers” to put it all together. Anyone interested in helping out should contact Christine.
Kindness Pen Pals & Cottonwood Village place setting collection: Meri Thomason
Volunteers who are interested in participating in a pen pal campaign, reaching out to lonely people in the Sedona/Cottonwood area, are encouraged to contact Meri Thomason ([email protected] or text 602 526-0055) for more details.
Cottonwood Village is requesting up to 60 mismatched place servings - pieces of china in good condition - and also silverware. Please contact Meri Thomason ([email protected] or text 602 526-0055) to make arrangements for pick up or drop off.
Mothers Day Gifts for residents of the Verde Valley Sanctuary: Kathy Huffstetler [email protected]
Kathy is suggesting that we make Mother’s Day gifts for the residents of the Verde Valley Sanctuary. The Sanctuary offers a safe haven for victims of family violence and sexual assault, providing shelter, community outreach, legal advocacy and education and prevention. Anyone invested in participating should contact Kathy.
Word and Warmth https://www.wordsandwarmth.org Kathy Karlic [email protected]
Kathy Karlic’s nonprofit Words & Warmth proposes a blanket making project focused for foster children. Words and Warmth have an established relationship with Arizona’s Children Association who will identify the needs to fill. In 2020 Words and Warmth donated in excess of 50 blankets and 100 bookmarks for their children.
In addition, Words & Warmth proposes intersecting with Kindness in Schools, and the Children Grief Bag project. Finally, anyone wishing to write inspirational messages for the many items donated throughout the year will be greatly appreciated. 1400 warm hand crafted items all with beautiful messages were donated in 2020 and approximately 500 bookmarks!
